Finding counselling near me

If you go to Google, and start typing counsellor, one of the most common suggestions is ‘near me’. In today’s world, which in some ways is moving towards a more virtual, online existence, somehow nearness matters. Is it the sheer difficulty of obtaining a face-to-face appointment with a health professional? Are people finding that online contact is somehow not sufficient?

To Zoom or not to Zoom?

As a counsellor I did much of my training under government restrictions and so online counselling became the norm for me and my clients. It worked and still works well, clients seemed to benefit, and I learned. And yet on the return to seeing clients face to face, for me as a counsellor I noticed the difference, in particular a greater sense of emotional and psychological connection. On calls, clients, and counsellors too, can go missing and can lose that sense of contact. In a room though, I can clearly see how the client is, how my feedback is landing and what sort of rapport we have.

Coming back to the room

So, I think I understand why looking for a local counsellor might be popular, and ironically it is the IT that gives us the virtual alternative that helps us locate counsellors in the real world. Hop onto Google Maps, type in Counsellors and you’ll see what I mean. As a local counsellor, I have a knowledge of the area, of the demographics, the climate, the landscape, what people do for a living, what the everyday challenges are. I know other local professionals and have contacts for those times when greater support is needed.
